Unproduced Sketch: The Egg MacGuffin

Sometimes a sketch is based on real, personal observations, or larger societal issues, and sometimes it’s just based on the observation that “MacGuffin” sounds a bit like “McMuffin.”

There are so many reasons why this one was not made:

  1. It needs to be shot in a McDonald’s or a set that looks a lot like a McDonald’s, both of which are prohibitively expensive.

  2. It prominently feature McDonald’s logos and properties, which would probably make our legal team’s head explode.

  3. It requires more than the usual camera set ups, which slows down production, which means you would only be able to shoot one sketch that day instead of two, which would effectively make this sketch twice as expensive.

  4. There are potentially difficult and expensive practical shots (glowing bag, hamburglar costume, amulet, etc.)

  5. There are potentially difficult and expensive VFX shots.

Even if you can manage all the above, the sketch is sort of rambling structurally, and only works if the audience is familiar with the term “MacGuffin.”

In spite of all these issues, I liked this sketch a lot. I love playing big genre games, and I love committing hard to aggressively stupid ideas.
